Samantha Patton is the only daughter of Alexander and Janet Patton. The family lived modestly in San Fransisco, where her father worked as the chief of police and her mother as an adminstrative assistant. A daddy's girl through and through, Sam idolized her father from an early age, which put a strain on the relationship she had with her mother. She wanted to be just like him in every aspect and viewed him as a hero among men.
The love she had for her father only made his death in 1995 more traumatic. He was killed in the line of duty, shot by a mugger in attempts to subdue him on his day off. She had always wanted to go into the police force to make her father proud. While her mother thought it would deter her, it only made Samantha that much more devoted to joining the force once she'd completed college.
After Alexander's death, Sam's relationship with her mother didn't get any stronger. They grew further apart, both devastated and unable to cope with the hole his death had left in their hearts. Three years later, Samantha was off to college, choosing the University of California to pursue her degree in criminal justice. Because of her father's sacrifice (and the situation it put her mother in financially), she received a nearly full ride to the school, and her academic success only aided her in future years.
Even as she graduated, Sam wasn't finished training. In order to be a police officer, she had to go through the academy specific to it, though it was a lot less time consuming than four years of university. By 2003, she was a rookie cop for the San Fransisco police department. She worked here for a few years before seeking out new opportunities in Sacramento. It was too difficult being in her father's former place of work, so she wanted a change of scenery.
That change landed her in Sacremento, where she partnered with a more experienced officer named Finn Bishop. Not long after teaming up with him, she was nearly killed in the line of duty, saved only by his quick thinking. They both left the shootout unscathed, and Sam had been forever grateful to Finn for that. He earned her respect and her trust that day, and not many of her colleagues could ever say that was true.
Her distrust was warranted, as they would later discover. It turned out that Finn's father, police commissioner, was corrupt and that the corruption ran deep within their department. Neither of them knew who they could trust other than one another and were considering leaving for new opportunities. Their decision was cemented when Finn confronted his father and instead witnessed his death at the hands of another officer. This led to the corrupt officers losing their badges, but it was too little, too late. Neither cared to stay in California any longer.
They decided a new coast was a dramatic a change as they could muster and shipped off to Boston to open their own private investigation service. The two of them have been here for just over three years, and Samantha has never felt better. The business is a large success, though the cases have started to get weirder and weirder as of recently. She figures complaining is worthless, since a job is a job, and any job, no matter how odd, helps fill their stomachs with food and pay the bills.

Her trust is hard to come by because of the dishonesty in her former department. When trusting the wrong person could come at the cost of her life, it was better to be cautious.
Despite everything that has happened to her in recent years, Sam has managed to keep a sense of humor. She figures if she can't laugh about it, what's the point in living?
Harbors feelings for her partner in business, Finn. Though their relationship was strictly platonic for so many years, the shift began to occur after they had moved to Boston. He was all she had left from her former life, and the fact that she owed him her life didn't help.
